Even as I write this, search engines like Google are thinking up different ways to rate websites. The reason why websites get rated, is to see which ones get put higher in the free search pages. For example when you search for something in a search service like Google, the websites you see at the top of the page have a better rating than the ones at the bottom or on page 1000.

As you know, if your website shows on page 1000 in a search listing, you have absolutely no chance that someone will ever see it, let alone click on it. There are many factors that go into where your website gets placed in different search directories, but one of the best ways is to have as many websites linking to your website as you can.

Most search engines bump your webs sites rating (ranking or pagerank) if they see that many web sites link to you. That's because they think if so many websites link to you, then you must be a very popular site. So they give extra weight to sites with a large number of "inbound" or "incoming" links. You may also have heard of "reciprocal links" as well, but more search engines are giving less importance to these since many websites have been in the business of sharing links. The other great way to get one-way inbound links is through the use of Blog sites. There are millions of blogs sites currently on the internet and they keep growing. Blogs are for the most part journals people keep online and make a webpage or website based on their entries. There are programs you can use to post tiny little messages on thousands of blogs which create links to the website(s) you want to promote. Now when all the search spiders and bots start going through all these blogs, your website(s) URLs are found and indexed. These links start to add up quickly, as does your websites ranking.
